TCD Ultrasonography Equipment
London – Mar 2022
Amoke Foundation acquired a Transcranial Doppler (TCD) Ultrasound Machine for use in the Southwest region of Nigeria. The equipment has been shipped to our pain management hub (PMH) that is strategically located to serve five states in the region. A TCD is invaluable in detecting early onset of strokes in young SCD patients. In most cases in sub-Saharan Africa, by the time they are seen in the clinic it is too late, they are already stroke patients. This step is in line with our stroke prevention programme scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2022.
Sickle Cell Diagnostics
Sickle cell anaemia is the result of sickle-shaped deformations of the erythrocytes due to a genetic defect. This often leads to occlusions of smaller and larger arteries with recurrent circulatory disorders, which in turn can cause a stroke due to increased blood flow speeds. The Transcranial Doppler is not only important in diagnostics, but also in prognostics, and is a decision-making aid for optimal therapy planning during blood transfusions. Blood transfusions in patients with abnormal TCD values significantly reduce the risk of stroke. According to recent studies, children who can benefit from receiving blood transfusions can be identified months before a stroke using TCD measurements.
Research & Training
In line with our knowledge transfer objectives, a new research program will be announced in due cause with the opportunity for two PhD students to train in the TCD Ultrasonography in sickle cell disease. It will feed into the much needed data repository to assist in developing a better understanding of the relationship between blood flow in the brain and the genetics of SCD.
Donations & Support
This is no doubt a drop in the ocean and we urge our well wishers to support our fundraising activity by donating generously. A TCD machine is a must have in clinics right across the region as a standard stroke prevention drive for children between 0-2 years. Early diagnosis could prevent tens of thousands of SCD child deaths each year. Help our organization by donating today! All donations go directly to making a difference for our cause.
